In November 2003, EICC was the first conferences venue to receive European Foundation for Quality Management Award (EFQMA) which did not came as a surprise since the center by that time had developed its reputation for quality standards.īy 2010 the success of the center was so great, that they saw the need for expansion of event space, and in 2013 it had New Atrium and Lennox Suit opened for business. Nelson Mandela and other commonwealth leaders attended this event as well. She was Head of Commonwealth for the CHOGM conference in 1997. This was not the only time Her Majesty The Queen paid visit to EICC. Even the royal opening was arranged in 1996 when Her Majesty The Queen cut the ribbon to officially declare the opening of the Edinburgh International Conference Centre. The center was opened in 1995 and already in September EICC held its first ever conference when Sir Tom Farmer brought Kwik Fit’s Silver Jubilee to the venue. In March 1994 the traditional topping out ceremony was held as the construction of the center was coming to an end. In March 1993 an official ground breaking ceremony took place and the construction begun. It was designed by the architect Sir Terry Farell. The center was part of the biggest urban regeneration scheme outside London - Edinburgh Exchange Masterplan in the west part of the city. Within a 2km radius of the EICC, there are more than 10,000 beds and a large number of restaurants, bars, coffee shops, museum and galleries. The Edinburgh International Airport is only 10 km away, Edinburgh’s Waverley Station is a few minutes away by taxi and Haymarket Station is 5- minute walk from the Center. In fact, EICC was the first conference avenue in the world to use revolving auditoria.ĮICC is easily accessible regardless the method of travel.
